Job Announcement

 

The Millbrook First United Methodist Church (MFUMC) in Millbrook, Alabama is accepting applications for the position of Children’s Ministry Coordinator. This position is responsible for developing and carrying out children’s ministry responsibilities in harmony with the beliefs, mission, and values of the MFUMC within the leadership structure of the church.

 

Overview:

 

       Must be a Christian and represent not only MFUMC, but Jesus Christ Himself and demonstrate a real love and concern for all people.

       Must collaborate with church staff, Children’s Ministry Action Team (CMAT), and church children and families in a professional, caring, and positive manner.

       Must be pleasant, discreet, tactful, and treat visitors with courtesy and respect.

       Must maintain a positive, helpful attitude when dealing with people.

       Must show a willing attitude of Christian service to their position and its responsibility.

 

Terms of Employment:

 

       Children’s Ministry Coordinator is considered a part-time position.

       The Pastor provides direct oversight of the Children’s Ministry Coordinator.

       The Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) is responsible for overall supervision of church employees and may administer performance reviews of the Children’s Ministry Coordinator position.

       Salary recommendations originate with the SPRC and are then forwarded to the Finance Committee.

 

Organizational Relationship:

 

       Works closely with the Pastor and other church staff members as a member of MFUMC’s Ministry Team to further the vision and mission of MFUMC.

  •        Engages in church ministries and/or activities that are consistent with the ministry plan of the Pastor and Ministry Team and furthers the vision and mission of MFUMC.

 

 

 

 

Overall Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  •        Plan and facilitate Sunday School, Vacation Bible School (VBS), Wednesday night programs, and other special programming for grades K-6 including the selection of curriculum in line with Methodist theology and the planning of creative, developmentally appropriate activities for the children.
  •        Recruit and coordinate volunteers to help facilitate all ministry activities with children (Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, VBS, etc.).  
  •        Actively invite and recruit children and families for participation in Sunday School, Wednesday night programming, VBS and other special programming.
  •        Coordinate special events in the life of the church as related to children (e.g., Confirmation, Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas Musical, etc.).
  •        Ensure that the church complies with its Safe Sanctuary policy and procedures by training volunteers; obtaining background checks; maintaining records; recruiting the necessary volunteers for all activities; and periodically updating and maintaining the policy, procedures, and covenant statements.
  •        Build and maintain connections with children, parents, and volunteers by being present during the Wednesday nights and other church-wide activities
  •        Proactively identify and welcome children (including parents) who are new or repeat visitors at Sunday worship. Follow up with any requests noted on the weekly attendance sheets.
  •        If necessary, facilitate a children’s message during Sunday morning worship.
  •        Organize and coordinate alternative worship opportunities for younger children during worship service if it becomes necessary.
  •        Order, collect, and distribute curriculum and supplies for children’s discipleship and religious education classes and opportunities.
  •        Ensure that the nursery is provided with staff during Sunday school, worship, Wednesday night, and other church-wide activities or meetings.
  •        Ensure that all nursery/childcare staff are trained in CPR, First Aid, Safe Sanctuary, and childcare duties.
  •        Attend staff meetings, Church Council meetings, and Ministry Leadership Team meetings.
  •        Organize and maintain the children’s ministry office/supply room.
  •        Submit notices for the bulletin, newsletter, webpage and/or any other church related media to publicize activities.
  •        Project budget needs for the Children’s Ministry for each year and work diligently       to keep expenses within the budgeted amount.
  •        Create inviting and creative classroom spaces and prep for all activities.
  •        Coordinate training Sunday acolytes, and leading children as they participate in worship music and services.
  •        Keep and maintain records of youth participation.
  •        Communicate in a timely manner and as effectively as possible using all available resources (social media, email, website, bulletin boards, etc.).
  •        Participate in continuing education related to position as provided by the conference or other appropriate organization.
  •        Other duties and administrative tasks as assigned by the Pastor or SPRC.

 

Skills, Qualifications, and Other Requirements:

 

  •        Familiarity with Methodist theology to select curriculum and coordinate programming with the Pastor and Youth Ministry Coordinator in supporting the continuum of Christian education.
  •        Ability to plan, schedule, organize, and carry out program activities.
  •        Experience in working effectively with parents and volunteers, motivating their participation in the program, and enlisting their help in carrying out the mission of the program.
  •        Ability to work effectively with church staff - Pastor, Youth Minister, Administrative Secretary, Minister of Music, and Custodial Staff - in coordinating events and activities in fulfilling of the mission of the church.
  •        Understand characteristics of healthy families and provide support and compassion for those who may be experiencing family challenges.
  •        Interact easily and effectively with children. Understand the stages of child development and plans age-appropriate programming for children from birth to Grade 6.
  •        High level of professionalism; integrity; self-motivation; confidentiality; a positive, friendly attitude; and a deep, lived faith in Jesus Christ.
  •        College education or compatible work experience/training in children’s ministry preferred.
  •        Ability to pass a background check screening.

 

Hours and Pay

       Hours: 20 – 25 per week, Monday - Thursday and Sunday. As is typical for ministry, this position requires a flexible schedule, including onsite office hours agreed upon by the Pastor and SPRC, Sunday and Wednesday night services, occasional Saturday or weeknight services, evening activities and meetings, and camps requiring travel.
